"Community arts and arts education are essential for any successful community. Without local community arts we have no beautiful murals covering the buildings downtown, no classical music concerts in our Lansing parks, and no dancers preforming at our numerous Old Town festivals. The easiest way to reach kids and teens is through the school systems. This is why arts education must always be fully funded and assessable to all students no matter their address, gender, or ethnicity.  When Saddleback Barbeque put out a request for local artists to submit a logo redesign, I knew my students would love to leave their own marks on Lansing's culture by helping the restaurant out. My name is Sarah Schumacher Wills (aka SCHU), I am an Everett High School teacher, and I teach AP Studio Art. Thus far, my students have submitted 15 artworks in the hopes that one will be selected for the logo redesign. They were thrilled to go through the logo making steps, they were excited to get their gift certificate rewards for participating, and they are eager to see if Saddleback utilizes one of their designs. We are glad to partner with another part of the Lansing community.

Thank you - Sarah Schumacher Wills (SCHU)

  • Saddleback BBQ Received a Letter From Governor Whitmer!

We want to thank Governor Whitmer for this very thoughtful letter! Thank you to our Customers, Subscribers, & Employees that made it all possible. We are all in this together!

“On behalf of the State of Michigan, I want to express my gratitude for all that your small business has done to help our state get through the COVID-19 pandemic. Amidst historic challenges, you rolled up your sleeves and pitched in to help your fellow Michiganders. By donating meals to children in need during COVID-19, you put the well-being of others first and made a difference in your community. I could not be prouder of the resilience, creativity, and compassion that your business has shown. Thanks to hardworking, selfless Michiganders like your team at Saddleback BBQ, we are emerging from the pandemic stronger than ever.” – Gretchen Whitmer. Governor of Michigan.

This is also such a relief because as you may recall, we wrote a very respectful letter to the Governor which was signed by 100+ other restaurants and bars. At the time we wrote it, we were very worried that it would be seen in a negative light. This letter shows us that our worries were unneeded.

We are extremely delighted that she recognized that we were being respectful of her important role in the state and that we were only sharing the perspective of many in our industry at the time. It’s such a breath of fresh air that we could have a disagreement while being respectful and courteous to one another.

If you’d like to learn more about what Saddleback BBQ, our Customers, our Subscribers, and our amazing employees did during COVID, go here!

    Thank you so much!

  • Pumpkin Spiced Brisket

Introducing the Pumpkin Spiced Brisket Latte & Meal!

It all starts with a locally sourced Michigan Pumpkin shaved to provide the essence of Fall. Then we carefully extract the magical flavors from a Pumpkin Spiced Latte & inject it into a Certified Angus Beef Brisket. Next, we smoke the brisket on our all-wood smokers. After about 12 hours on the smoke, we slice the brisket pencil thin and top it with whipped cream, cinnamon, & pumpkin shavings. Supplies are very limited.

Tag your friend below that is addicted to Pumpkin Spiced Lattes and they will be eligible to win one!

BONUS! We are now offering the Pumpkin Spiced Brisket as a Latte Drink! We blend the Pumpkin Spiced Brisket, Whipped Cream, Cinnamon, & Shaved Pumpkin to a liquid. We pour it over ice & top it with a slice of brisket, whipped cream, and spices.

PRO-TIP! If you’re looking for an extra kick, we recommend adding some Captain Morgan or Caramel Vodka for a truly glorious autumn morning.

From the people that brought you the Brisket Candle & Brisket vape.

  • Ingham County Live Animal Auction

For the past 5 years, Saddleback has purchased animals at the 4H live animal auction to support the college funds for some amazing kids and their incredible families. We have been able to donate over $20,000! Due in large part to our community.

The goal of 4H is to help kids develop life skills through experiential learning programs. One of those programs is the LiveStock Auction that occurs at the Ingham County Fairground. Kids are taught responsibility, confidence, and leadership by raising an animal and bringing it to the market to sell for a premium price. Many of the kids use the money they raised to help pay for college. At 5am, when most kids are sleeping, these kids are up feeding, grooming, and tending to their animals.

For the 2021 Live Animal Auction, we wanted to give the community an opportunity to donate to the auction, without needing to purchase an entire hog. We started a fund that people could donate to. Anyone that donated received a Saddleback Gift Card for equal value.

Below we breakdown the amount of donations raised and where the money went.

We also wanted to feature some of the amazing kids involved in the program by telling their story.

    First up, Wesley:

Last year we had the privilege of purchasing one of Wesley’s pigs from the show. This year things are a little different, Wesley is competing again, but is also helping coach his siblings through the program. He also took on a new challenge, raising a lamb.

Wesley has many interests outside of the 4H program, he loves soccer, plays basketball, and runs cross country and track. We asked him how he is able to do so many things at once, his answer was unbelievable

“I have to prioritize and plan for what I love to do the most, which means I get up around 6:00 am every day all summer to feed, walk and wash my animals before I go to soccer camp and other sports training all day, and I’m back in the barn until after dark most nights doing the same thing. I do multiple things all year long because I’m trying to learn different things from different experiences, and I love most of all competition!”

When asked about helping his siblings, he said the main goal, aside from instilling a great work ethic, was to let them know to “become friends with their animals … Our show animals become our best friends”

We were curious about where he learned the necessary skills to raise a great animal. He essentially said it is a collaborative effort. His mother, Melissa, is better at certain aspects (training the animals for showings), his father, Tim, is better at other areas (i.e. selecting the best quality food for each animal to ensure the best health for the animal). He also said he learns from other friends he meets at the shows.

As mentioned above, this is Wesley’s first time raising a lamb. We asked him what new challenges this has presented. He said, because it was brand new to him, it was incredibly difficult. The skills he had acquired for raising pigs do not translate with lambs. At first, the lamb, whose name is Fudge, “was a little crazy”. “I asked a lot of questions, but still made the mistake of not training him correctly early enough, so I had to work extra hard later to get him ready to show.”

We were curious about how he was introduced to the 4H program, “My mom and dad were both in 4-H and showed animals when they were young. They always believed what they learned was important for us kids to experience. Since I’m the oldest, we got a couple of pigs the year before I was able to show so I would be able to see what it was like. I have always loved animals and was excited for my first year. Each year is hard work and takes a lot of time every day, but I still love it.”

If you’re interested in having your kids join the program, Wesley thinks it’s a great idea!

“If you are interested in raising and showing livestock I would suggest you do it, it is a really fun activity and a great group of friends – it’s like a big show family! Raising animals is a huge commitment though, it takes a lot of patience, time, and hard work. But when you get in that show ring and do a good job it feels so good. You will feel amazing!”

    Thanks, Wesley!

    Next up, Meah:

If you have any involvement in the Ingham County Live Animal Auction, chances are you know the Palmatier family. Meah Palmatier has been dominant in the auctions since Saddleback first got involved.

We have made it a loose tradition to purchase the Grand Champion Market Hog every year. Since Meah is so incredibly talented, this means we are often end up purchasing her hog (she has won Grand Champion 3 of the last 4 years!).

We asked her to list a few of her accomplishments:

⁃ Champion Showman for my age division at the fair the past 4 years

⁃ Grand Champion Market Hog at the Ingham County Fair 3 out of the past 4 years

⁃ Top 10 in the Michigan Swine Youth Challenge

⁃ Exhibited the Champion Michigan Breed Purebred at the Michigan Livestock Expo in 2020

⁃ Received the Premier Stockman Award for Michigan Livestock Expo for 3 years.

If you are not familiar with the world of showing livestock, this list is IMPRESSIVE. We often joke that she is the equivalent of the Alabama Football Program for raising animals.

Meah has participated in the Large Animal Auction for the past 8 years. She said this year was slightly more difficult than most. Due in large part to the fact that she and her siblings raised 18 pigs! “Which includes getting up every morning to clean pens, feed, walk and bathe them.”

Meah has many hobbies outside of raising her animals. “Aside from working with my animals I really enjoy playing volleyball at the Varsity High School and National level. I also have lots of fun playing basketball at Williamston. I am very involved in my school being a member of organizations like the National Honor Society, Student Government, peer to peer to name a few. I also enjoy baking and sewing with my Grandma. And like any girl my age, I like spending time with my family and friends.”

After high school, Meah has plans to attend college (hopefully playing volleyball). Then eventually sees herself either becoming an orthodontist or doing something in the agriculture field.

When asked if Meah would like to stay active in the 4-H program after she can no longer compete, her answer was perfect, “I definitely see myself staying involved with the 4H program when I am no longer able to participate. I want to give back to an amazing organization that has helped develop me into who I am today. I want to continue to help younger youth in 4H get more involved with livestock, and find a love for the livestock industry as I have developed.”

    Thank you, Meah!

  • Letter to Governor Whitmer from Michigan Restaurant Owners

    Dear Governor Whitmer,
Thank you for your service to our state and for helping us during this terribly difficult time. We’ve stayed quiet on all things political, and don’t intend this to be political. This is not about right or left, this is about the livelihoods of everyone in the restaurant industry and the decision to extend the ban on dine-in service from today until February 1.

As you are well aware, there are more than 100,000 unemployed hospitality workers and many restaurant owners on the brink of bankruptcy. At the recent press conference, when referring to the bans on indoor dining you said “They’ve never been closed, they have take-out opportunities and they have outdoor dining,” While this is correct, many of us in the industry felt that this didn’t show enough empathy or understanding for our businesses. Most of our businesses simply cannot survive on Take-Out alone. The loss of sales has put thousands of small restaurant operators in Michigan on the verge of bankruptcy.

We completely understand your concern for safety. But we have met all 3 of the “Key Metrics for Safe Restart” established by the MDHHS. The 7 day average of new cases, Hospitalizations, and Percent Positivity are all within the metrics for a safe restart established by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

Let’s address the elephant in the room. We know that there were some restaurants that did not follow the rules when we were allowed to be opened. Let us be clear: They were irresponsible and wrong. On the other hand, I can assure you that we took the safety restrictions extremely seriously and we were diligent about enforcing them. We made sure social distancing was enforced, we demanded all customers wear masks, we have kept health screening data on every single employee every day for the entire pandemic, we added barriers, we increased sanitization protocols, and much more. We can assure you that we were keeping our employees and customers safe. Please don’t punish us all because of the ignorant actions of the few bad operators.

During this pandemic, our staff has been on the frontlines serving the community while putting themselves at risk. We feed the hospital workers, the children with no lunch programs, the churchgoers, and the less fortunate. We Innovate to promote safe practices to get our product to our customers with online ordering, curbside, takeout, and delivery. We do this to survive, but also because we take our responsibility in the community very seriously.

Although we have grit, we are running out. We need to open. Restaurants are the backbone of a community, employing over 15 million people nationally, and feeding our communities. 33% of restaurants in Michigan say that they will not be able to stay in business, according to the MRLA.

Please, let us open safely as soon as possible. Thank you very much for your consideration and for all you have done for our state!

Signed: (These are the original signers of the letter.)

  • Saddleback BBQ's COVID Timeline

A video featuring everything we did for Covid in 2020

    • March 13th - Schools in Michigan were shut down for the remainder of the year. This meant school lunch programs that students rely on would be temporarily canceled. Saddleback and the community stepped up to help out. Together we were able to donate over 1000 meals to students in need.
    • March 18th - A ban was placed on dine in services for restaurants in Michigan. Saddleback put together a website with a list of all the local restaurants that were remaining open, and advertised to have the list reach more people. We updated the website weekly to ensure the information was accurate. In the end, it helped over 50,000 people find information about restaurants.
    • April 2nd - A surge in Covid cases led to an overwhelmed healthcare system. Once again the Saddleback community stepped up and together we were able to donate over 200 meals to first responders.
    • April 5th - Grocery stores were beginning to run out of essential supplies (gloves, masks, cleaning supplies, etc.). As a way to help we began to sell these items to the community.
    • April 7th - As a way to bring hope to the Lansing community, we partnered with Taproot Picture to make a website and video that celebrated the Lansing community, called Lansing Strong. We paid to have the video advertised on local television stations and social media.
    • April 10th - We realized the negative effects Covid was having on local artists. We offered a free “livestream concert” of Rachel Curtis. This was a way to help a local artist make money and give the community some entertainment.
    • Kingsford recognized our work in the community and awarded us with a grant of $10,000 to help us continue our initiatives.
    • April 29th - It became clear students wouldn’t be able to have a traditional graduation ceremony. We wanted to honor the students to do so we purchased 5 billboards in the Lansing area to celebrate students.
    • May 23rd - Midland was hit with a massive flood. We were able to raise over $1,400 to donate to help rebuild Midland.
    • August 6th - Ingham County’s annual fair was canceled, which meant these kids would not be able to sell the livestock they had worked so hard to raise. Saddleback was able to purchase $6,700 worth of livestock to help support the children’s college funds.
    •  November 24th - It became clear this would not be an ordinary Thanksgiving. As the second surge hit, it meant people would not all people be able to be with their loved ones for the holiday. Saddleback and the community came together and was able to donate meals for over 900 people in need.
    • December 10th - We helped a local bakery (Mitten Raised) that was struggling and ended up helping them sell out of food for weeks! VIDEO
    • January 23rd - We worked on a campaign with Coachs Pub and Grill, we purchased a whole hog and smoked it at their restaurant, we also paid for advertising to help drive business to their store.
    • March 30th - Saddleback Co-Owners, with the help of donations from the community, paid off school lunch debt for 9 different local school districts.
    • April 6th - We offered Free Pork Rinds to anyone that showed us their vaccination card.
    • April 21st - We offered $100 to Employees that received the vaccination.
    • July 26th - We received a letter from Governor Whitmer thanking us for our work in the community throughout the pandemic.
    • August 1st - Saddleback began raising money for our 4H fund. In exchange for donating we provided Saddleback Gift Cards of equal value of their donations (i.e. if someone donated $50, we sent them a $50 Gift Card.
    • August 2nd - We started a GoFundMe for 7 local businesses who were victims of a recent string of break ins and vandalism. We set a goal of $1,000, after 3 days we had reached over $8,600!
    • September 1st - We were lucky enough to be featured in an article by Business Insider!

We will continue to update this list as events occur. Thank you to the community without which none of this would be possible. Stay strong.
